Ownership of data

What you should know:

Ownership of data

Time and again, the question arises as to who actually owns the data. This part of the learning module aims to make participants aware of the value of their data.

  • First, the question of data ownership is addressed. The following exercises with subsequent discussion are useful here:
    • CUMILA Wiki c2L01 - Ownership of data
    • CUMILA Wiki c2L01b - Ownership of data II
  • The participants should then be made aware of the real value of data:
    • CUMILA Wiki c3L01 - The value of my data.
  • The company figures of e.g. Facebook can be used as a further stimulus for discussion. The use of Facebook services is free of charge for internet users, yet the company earns several billion. This is mainly through the sale of personalised advertising. Based on the current turnover figures and the approximate number of users, an average value per user can be calculated.
  • Why data is also valuable for companies can be worked out with the following exercise:
    • CUMILA Wiki c2L06 - Tell-tale receipt

Further examples and illustrations can be found in the CUMILA module

Read the relevant chapters in the module and, if necessary, work out the exercises mentioned yourself or prepare them for your lessons.
